newbie tips
To get the most out of your precious time on your yoga mat, and to truly find the best teachers and classes for your needs we recommend you take the leap and try the New Member Special. You’ll get unlimited classes for 1 month for just $55 and therefore you get a chance to try all the Yoga and Fitness classes we have to offer, find what works for you, and start building some healthy habits, you can do it!
Here are a few pointers on how to navigate your first few classes at COIL:
Try different class styles.
Variety is essential in the beginning, it will empower you to choose what style serves you best based on the unique needs of your body, mood, and mind on any given day.
Explore different classes with several teachers.
Did you love your teacher? Yes? Great! So do we!
Not so much? That’s okay too!
We stand behind the expertise of each of our yoga faculty members, but we also know that sometimes you “click” better with certain approaches. Take the time to try out classes with a few of our experts. Each of them will welcome the opportunity to get to know you a bit before class and be happy to answer any questions afterwards.
Do practic frequently.
Aim for 2-3 classes each week, including at least 1 Restorative class. Practicing more often is fine too especially if you balance classes that are active with those that are gentle and recovery-based.
As you will hear teachers emphasize often during class, listen to your body and what feels good to you. If you’re not sure what the best class style is for you, or what teachers might be the best fit…consequently, that’s why we’re here!
All of us at COIL truly want to help you discover your yoga home. COIL Yoga is an acronym for Conscious Open Integrated Living and thus we are thrilled to see you on your mat, and are here to support you every step of the way.

What is Yoga?
Yoga, which means “union” or “to yoke,” is both a philosophical system and a science whose goal is the attainment of self -awareness or an elevated consciousness. Although ancient, yoga is not outdated. It has proved it’s value for a vast diversity of people from every culture in our modern world. Hatha Yoga offers all students the opportunity to deepen our connection to ourselves through physical movement, breathing practices and eventually meditation. Yoga is an invitation for people to experience themselves in all dimensions of their being. Yoga is a personal journey for everyone. Your practice doesn’t have to “be” like anyone else’s experience. The support of educated teachers and the community of others is a wonderful foundation for any new student.
I am not flexible, so how can I do yoga?
This is by far the most common response from a new student. In turn, my response to them is, “Are you mentally flexible?” Most people will say yes! Who would admit they are stubborn? If you are willing to stretch yourself mentally than the physical flexibility will come, guaranteed.
I have never done yoga before, how do I get started?
There are several ways to “get started” on your personal journey into the world of Yoga. Workshops like “Intro to Yoga Basics Series” gives you a beginners’ road map for the basic postures, breathing and general framework of Yoga. We also encourage students to jump into the Beginning level classes or Restorative classes offered weekly. A more personal approach would be to set up a private session to develop a personal practice and get a one-on-one experience.
Is it safe to do yoga if I have an injury or medical condition?
In most cases the answer to that question is yes. In fact yoga is an excellent way to support the body in its healing process. Our Restorative Yoga classes are the best way to start a practice if you are dealing with an injury or chronic illness. You will want to inform your doctor or health care provider before you begin your practice, and be sure to let your teacher know what is going on so they can address your specific needs. Our teachers take the time to check in with you before class as often as possible so they are aware of your needs. This is really what makes us special at COIL, we really do see you!
What style of yoga is right for me?
There are many different styles of Yoga. Some styles are fast paced and vigorous while others are very gentle and slow-moving. All of the styles of yoga have benefits, so evaluating your individual needs and personality type will help point you in the right direction. At COIL Yoga, we encourage our students to experiment with all the different styles of yoga. You never know until you try!
I’m pregnant, should I do yoga?
Yoga is a fabulous way to support your body and the life forming within. There are some precautions however, so you will want to consult your doctor and let your instructor know that you are pregnant (especially if you are in your first trimester). Yoga can benefit moms in both the prenatal and postnatal phase of pregnancy, supporting you in both of those important stages of your journey into motherhood. Most importantly, yoga can teach you how to just be in this miraculous and crazy time of becoming a mom and raising young humans.
What are the benefits of yoga?

What do I need to do to prepare for a class?
This is your time so be available for yourself. Wear comfortable, breathable fabrics. Layering is also helpful, as your body temperature changes throughout your practice you will want options! Normally we practice in bare feet except for the Restorative classes, when you may wear socks if you prefer.
Your mat is an important tool and a symbol of commitment to your practice. Get one that you love, we have lots to offer in our boutique.
Avoid practicing with a full stomach, and drink plenty of water before class to remain hydrated through your practice.
Yoga is a process. Be consistent in your practice. Be patient and compassionate with yourself. It’s not a destination, it’s a journey, truly.
